SkillSelect Expression of Interest (EOI) System
Applicants for certain visa subclasses must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). Only the top candidates will receive an invitation to apply.
The following visa types can only be lodged through SkillSelect:
- Skilled (Points Tested) Visas:
- Skilled Independent Subclass 189
- Skilled Nominated Subclass 190
- Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Subclass 491
- Business Skills Visas:
- Business Talent Subclass 132
- Business Innovation & Investment Subclass 188
Some employer-sponsored visas can also be applied for via SkillSelect, but this is optional. You can still apply directly:
- Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS)
- Regional Skilled Migration Scheme (RSMS)
- 457 Temporary Work (Skilled)
How SkillSelect Applies to Skilled Points Tested Visas:
To submit an EOI, you must have completed your skills assessment and have proof of your English language proficiency. You may also want to secure a nomination from a state or territory government before lodging your EOI, as this could enhance your chances of receiving an invitation.
Processing of EOIs – Independent and Family Sponsored Applicants:
The Department of Immigration regularly reviews lodged EOIs and issues invitations to the best candidates for skilled points tested migration. This review happens every two weeks.
Quotas, known as “occupational ceilings,” are set for each occupational group. Candidates with higher points scores—due to more work experience, better English scores, and higher qualifications—are more likely to receive an invitation.
Processing of EOIs – State Nominated Applicants:
For state or territory nominations, you must first submit your EOI. After the state or territory government completes your nomination, you will typically receive an invitation from SkillSelect immediately.
You need a passing score (currently 65 points as of 1 July 2023) to receive an invitation for Skilled Points Tested visas. While occupational ceilings do not apply to state-nominated applicants, states and territories may have their own internal quotas for each occupation.
Time Limit to Apply After Being Invited:
Once you receive an invitation, you must submit your visa application within 60 days. If you do not apply within this timeframe, your invitation will expire. You can receive a maximum of two invitations before your application is removed from the EOI system.
Be prepared in advance to seize the opportunity when it arises. If you need a full assessment of your situation or assistance with your EOI and visa application, consider booking an immigration consultation.
