The Temporary Activity Visa (Subclass 408) allows you to come to Australia temporarily for various activities, such as working in entertainment, research, sports, and more.

Eligible Activities

  • Working in the entertainment industry
  • Invited activities from an Australian organization
  • Observing or participating in an Australian research project
  • Skilled work under a staff exchange arrangement
  • Sports competitions or training programs
  • Approved programs for youth exchange, cultural enrichment, community benefits

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible for the Temporary Activity (408) Visa, you must:

  • Intend to stay in Australia for three months or less, are applying from outside Australia, and have the support of an Australian organization or individual responsible for the event or activity.
  • Plan to stay for more than three months and are sponsored by an approved sponsor who meets the sponsorship requirements.
  • Meet the specific requirements for the activity type you’re applying for.
  • Have sufficient financial support for yourself and any family members.
  • Have appropriate health insurance.
  • Meet health and character requirements.
  • Intend to stay temporarily in Australia for the activity specified in your application.

Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Requirement

The GTE requirement ensures that temporary visas are used as intended and not for maintaining long-term residency in Australia. Applicants must demonstrate that their stay will be temporary. Officers will consider factors like:

  • Your personal circumstances
  • Your immigration history
  • Compliance with previous visa conditions
  • If you are under 18, the intention of your parents, guardians, or partner
  • Any other relevant factors

Financial Support

You must provide evidence of financial ability, like contracts or bank statements, to support yourself and family members.

English Language Requirements

For applicants under special programs, functional English (IELTS 4.5 or equivalent) is necessary to meet health and safety standards.

Sponsor Requirements

If you are applying from inside Australia, or if you are applying from outside Australia and staying for more than three months, your sponsor must provide:

  • The Sponsor’s Transaction Reference Number or Sponsorship Application ID.
  • A sponsor approval letter or receipt for lodging the sponsorship application.
  • A written statement from the sponsor agreeing to meet all sponsorship obligations for you and any dependent family members.

Sponsorship Requirements

If your stay exceeds three months or if you apply within Australia, you need an approved sponsor. There’s no nomination required for this visa.

What This Visa Allows You to Do

  • Stay in Australia for the period required for your approved activities:
    • Invited Participant: Up to 3 months
      Australian Government-Endorsed Event: Up to 4 years
      Other activities: Up to 2 years (some exceptions, such as superyacht crew, may have a maximum stay of 12 months)
  • Work in the activities approved for your visa
  • Bring eligible family members to Australia
  • Travel in and out of Australia as many times as you like while your visa is valid
