Training Visa (Subclass 407)
Overview
The Training Subclass 407 Visa is a short-term visa that allows individuals to undergo occupational training or professional development in Australia. It is intended for those who need to complete occupational registration or licensing requirements, improve their skills in a particular occupation, or participate in capacity-building programs overseas.
This visa is typically valid for up to 2 years. It comes with condition 8102, which restricts the holder from working outside the training specified in the visa application. You must also maintain health insurance while in Australia.
Applications must be submitted online, and you can apply either from within Australia or from overseas. Family members, such as spouses and children, can be included in the application.
Common Visa Criteria
There are two eligibility pathways for the visa, but all applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have functional English skills
- Hold private health insurance
- Have a genuine intention to stay temporarily in Australia for the specified purpose
- Meet the health and character requirements
Additionally, sponsorship by an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor is mandatory.
Occupational Trainees
This stream requires a nomination by the sponsor to undertake one of the following activities in Australia:
- Training necessary to obtain registration, membership, or a license to work in Australia or in your home country
- Training in an occupation listed on the 407 Training Visa Occupations List. Applicants must have relevant prior experience, including:
- At least 12 months of full-time experience in the occupation
- Experience obtained within the 24 months immediately prior to the nomination
- Training endorsed by a government agency or the applicant’s home government
Professional Development
This option requires that you are employed overseas in a management or professional position. The training primarily involves classroom instruction and must be directly relevant to your position.
Visa Conditions
The 407 visa is granted for a specific period, ranging from six months to two years. The Immigration Case Officer will determine the duration based on the estimated time needed to complete your training or professional development program. After the 407 visa expires, you may be eligible to apply for another visa.
If You Are Outside Australia When the Visa Is Granted:
- You can travel to and enter Australia after the visa is granted.
- You can remain in Australia for the duration specified (up to a maximum of two years), starting from your first entry into Australia.
If You Are Inside Australia When the Visa Is Granted:
- You can stay in Australia for the specified period granted (up to a maximum of two years), starting from the visa grant date.
Conditions Attached to the 407 Visa:
- Condition 8102: The primary visa holder must not work in Australia unless it is directly related to the training or professional development program specified in the visa application.
- Condition 8104: Secondary visa holders (such as family members included in the application) are restricted to working a maximum of 40 hours per fortnight while in Australia.
Upon receiving the visa, you will be issued a visa grant notification letter. This letter will outline the visa conditions, the exact stay period, and any entry or re-entry requirements, depending on whether you are applying from within or outside Australia.
