Student visa (subclass 500)

Student visa (subclass 500)

The Student visa allows international students to pursue full-time education and training in Australia. This visa permits students to stay in Australia for the duration of their course. To apply, students must enroll or have a letter of offer from an Australian education provider.

Visa Requirements:

The exact requirements depend on your “Immigration Risk,” which is determined by the risk level of your education provider and your nationality. As an applicant, you must:

  1. Enroll as a full-time student with an Australian education provider and provide confirmation of this (predominantly online courses are not eligible).
  2. Genuinely intend to complete your study in Australia.
  3. Meet the required English language proficiency (unless exempt).
  4. Have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for your stay.
  5. Show proof of sufficient funds for tuition, return airfare, living expenses, and any dependents.

Changes to English Language Requirements (Effective 23 March 2024):

  • Minimum IELTS score: Increased from 5.5 to 6.0 (or equivalent).
  • ELICOS program score: Raised from 4.5 to 5.0 (or equivalent).
  • Students in recognized university foundation or pathway programs require an IELTS score of 5.5. No changes for students studying English through ELICOS only.

Financial Capacity:

You must demonstrate you have access to enough funds to cover travel, tuition, living costs for you and your dependents. The Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) sets these amounts, based on your course, education provider, and personal circumstances.

Application Process:

  1. Enroll in a full-time course and obtain a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).
  2. Submit your visa application to the DOHA. Requirements vary based on your nationality and education provider.
  3. Once your visa is granted, you may enter or remain in Australia to study.

While studying, you can work up to 40 hours per fortnight during sessions. For research Masters and Doctoral students, different work conditions apply. Contact us for specifics.

Processing Time:

Visa application preparation may take several weeks, depending on how quickly you and any sponsors provide the necessary documentation. Processing times can vary based on the complexity of your case and DOHA priorities.

English Language Test Scores:

The following are the minimum test scores accepted for Student visa applications:

  • IELTS: 5.5 (combined with 10 weeks of ELICOS: 5.0; combined with 20 weeks: 4.5)
  • TOEFL (iBT): 46 (with 10 weeks ELICOS: 35; with 20 weeks: 32)
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): 162 (with 10 weeks ELICOS: 154; with 20 weeks: 147)
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE): 42 (with 10 weeks ELICOS: 36; with 20 weeks: 30)
  • Occupational English Test (OET): B in each component.

The test must be taken within two years before applying for the visa.

Financial Evidence:

You can provide proof of financial capacity through:

  • Evidence of funds for 12 months of living, travel, tuition, and school costs for dependents.
  • Proof of meeting the annual income requirement.
  • An Acceptance Advice of Secondary Exchange Students (AASES) form for secondary exchange students.
  • A letter of support from the Department of Foreign Affairs or Department of Defence.

Course Packaging:

You can apply for two or more courses on a single Student visa if there is clear progression between them. A CoE must be provided for each course.

Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Requirement:

To prove your intention to stay in Australia temporarily, you need to provide:

  • A statement of purpose.
  • Evidence of your economic circumstances and ties to your home country (e.g., family assets, business, etc.).
  • Proof of previous study and work experience (including a job offer for when you return home).
  • A letter from your employer showing a need for your improved skills.

COVID-19 and Travel Restrictions:

Be aware of current travel restrictions, and if your visa is expiring and you cannot return home, you must apply for a new visa. If your studies are ending, consider applying for a Visitor visa (subclass 600).

Work Conditions:

  • During breaks: You can work unlimited hours.
  • For Masters by Research or Doctorate students: You can work unlimited hours once you start your program.
  • During course sessions: You can only work 40 hours per fortnight, even if studying online.

Exceptions:

Special work arrangements may apply to student visa holders already enrolled in nursing or employed by select supermarkets.
